The guy on the right front is a real Dapper Dan man! I think he has a cigar in his front pocket. Beware of the Bavarian Landsturm.

Wow...he is even holding his rifle incorrectly! No wonder they did not issue him with a complete uniform! He definately is trying hard, a real wanna be.... Brian

Hey,
Dapper Dan looks like he has a M74/87 pouch, but what are the pouches that the cub scouts are wearing, are they M95? He is also packing an M88 Gewher with out a mag cover, and is that an earlier belt? Cool photo Joe

There you go Gus -- what really surprised me about the Boy Scouts was the random way the helmets seem to have been fitted. It is almost like they handed them how for the photo. Really some of them do not fit at all.

Hey Joe, I missed that, it looks like there are only about two scouts that have a Haube that actually fits, the rest are at least two sizes too small.

As ever, a very cool photo! Is this dated? The presence or Gewehr 98's leads me to believe this is either August or September 1914.

Those Landsturm who were armed with them lost them almost immediately as they were needed for Regular Armee formations preparing for the front. Of the photos I've seen in a several books, the units that were armed with 98's early war were Bavarian also.

Curious how the two fellows in their civies are the only two armed with 88's.

I am not as up on pouches as you Gus, which one of these are M95's, the left or the right? What is the other? Pouches at the left look wider.

Perhaps the men who are in uniform are prior service soldiers and the two in civies are untrained Ban II types. Just a guess.

Hey Geo,
The pouch that Daper Dan is wearing is a M1874/87 and the boys in uniform all have M1895 pouches, in the clip you posted, I believe that they pouches are the same, M95s, the differance in size is a trick of perspective. The M1895 was a rather boxy pouch if my refferance is correct, and the pouch on Daper Dan has been reffered to as a M1887/88, but I think that is wrong (I bought a set that was called the M87/88, and from Johan's book, they lood more like the M74/87) Oops, I think I have cought myself in a closed loop.
Best wishes

The M74/87 I have seen labled as Wurttemburg pouches, now I have a Model to go by, thanks Gus!

Scivvies? Who's standing in his underwear? :laughing6:

Landsturmmann Alois Schmitt. What a marvellous photo Joe, I'm tempted to pinch this one and print it for my study wall. Quirky.

Here we have the six musketeers–the only thing the back of the card states is that the photograph was taken in Munich.

Not a total uniformity in their clothing but what is really odd is the cross on top of their hat's. It is by far not the normal cross. My understanding is that these are older 88 type rifles.

The normal cross is 50 mm and would be something similar to the center cross on this Prussian plate.

Why is this cross??
