My first pickelhaube

Here is my first :D It is a very common piece and unnoteworthy
when compared to most the picks posted here but it is my first.

I did clean it using just Ivory soap on a damp cotton rag. I did
not polish any of the fittings. This thing came stinking badly of
smoke. It smelled BAD. The body does have some crazing but
is not too bad. No splits or big dents. Only one extra hole under
the rear spine. The original chin strap is gone as are the leather
wedges that hold the wappen in place. All of the stitching is tight
and appears to be original.

If I've done my home work, this is a M1897 Prussion spike. It has
post-1897 48.7mm mannschaften kokades.

The liner is still there but VERY fragile. The only markings I can
find is a 25? in ink on the rear visor. It could be just 25 but it almost
looks like a 252, 253, 258 or 259. really hard to tell.

What really caught my attention on this one was the incredible
detail of the wappen with just enough patina to give it some
character.

Wow. No kidding. Many collectors just do not realize the unbelievable detail on a line issued Wappen, Yours has the perfect patina to make it breathtaking. Just outstanding. The actual model is an M1895, and yes, post 1897 with the Reich's Kokarde. 1897 was a directive, not a new model.

The "extra hole under the rear spine", do you mean the one right behind the reinforcement plate in your photo?

So way to go Greg. Oh, by the way, now that you have one.............. you are doomed. Doooomed.... Doooomed....

Yes --that's the one. After looking at it, I am guessing that because
it is located under the spine shutter that this is a ventilation hole
and not an extra hole. Is that right ?

"Doomed" I could see how it would real easy tp go nuts with
these. Luckily (??????) I have a real small budget so it will be
a long while before I can do this again.

On the other hand--should I happen upon a Prussion officers spike
with a reserve front--------------------------- :D

Yes, that is right. That is part of the M1895 rear spine vent. Cool huh? T

That's neat.
Now that you've been bitten, your fate is sealed.
I've been putting up a wall of shelves tonight to display 88 helmets--all because an EM Pickelhaube turned up in a junktique store one day.
:)
Happy hunting,
Brad

Tony,
Very interesting. It's amazing the amount of thought that went into
the design of a simple leather helmet.

Brad,
"88 helmets" !!!!!!!! My wife would kill me. :( But I can see how it
could easily grow to that. Please post pictures wen everything is
displayed. I would love to see them.

Greg,

Nice first helmet! Nothing like holding one in your hands to really whet your appetite!

Here is another idea for your regiment marking. I believe it says 25R which stands for infantry Regiment, 25. This method of marking, which seems to be very reminiscent of the Saxon method was also used by the Rhineisch infantry regiments of IX Corps. Here is an example from our list

We do not yet have a good example of JR25, but I see no reason why it would be much different. I think there is a lot of value to having a list. If only it was more complete...getting better all the time!

Great job on the helmet!

Thank you Joe for the additional info. :thumb up:

Thanks everyone for the feedback. As you can probably tell
I am pretty excited about finally getting this helmet.

Hi Greg,

Congrats on the new helmet, it looks like a very nice example! You've definately been "bitten" by the haube bug, and have made the plunge. I look forward to seeing what you aquire in days to come as this new collection grows to match the quality as well as the quantity of your EK collection. :D :) :D

All the Best!

Thanks Alan. I can see where this could become very addicting.
I hope to see more of yours at the show next spring.

I just noticed this thread so.....

Here's my first from five years ago, a Baden 1895 EM. It's in very good nick but I'm not sure if the Baden Kokarde that came with it is original - I doubt it and I have since replaced it - thank's Chas!

Liner is perfect but no unit markings. There was one thing that I missed, being so 'green' back then - anyone see anything wrong? I doesn't bother me too much and one of these days I might find one???
