This one will require some work but I think it will be successful. It is quite small. In stahlhelm terms, I would say it is a size 60 shell. This was a 12th Jaeger Regiment helmet.

Hi Paul,
Nice project! Imo the marking means Infanterie Regiment 12, typically written as J.R. to avoid confusion with the number “1”. As Prussia started with IR 13 I think this might be a Bavarian helmet.
Regards,
Lars
I agree Prussian Regt 12 was Grenadier Regt 12
Jagers wore a shako

A very nice helmet to work on as a first restoration project! An original chinstrap plus correct regimental marking is another bonus. I doubt that this is a size 60cm. That would be unusually huge for a helmet from this era, most range between 55 - 57cm. The size of the helmet is primarily ink stamped on the inside of the shell along with a manufacturer mark. Sometimes, the size will also be stamped on the inside of the rear visor but this is not the norm. As mentioned, IR or JR both indicate”Infantry Regiment “.

The size 60 shell is really small In stahlhelm terms. A big stahlhelm is 68 cm. This helmet fits between 52 cm - 54 cm. It is stamped B.A.L. 1911.

B.A.L. 1911.
B.A.I. 1911 means the helmet was received by "Bekleidungs-Amt I. Armee Korps" (clothing depot 1st army corps) in 1911, this marking could refer to the Bavarian 1st army corps or the Prussian 1st army corps, however there was only a Bavarian I.R. 12, and Bavarian I.R. 12 was part of the Bavarian 1st Army Corps, so the markings make sense.
When you take of the Wappen, is there a "ghost" visible that shows the outline of the Wappen?
Regards,
Lars

If it was originally Bavarian there will be two sets of Wappen mounting holes assuming that the Prussian Wappen didn't have the loops re-soldered.

I'm in the midst of restoring a Bavarian Life Guard/Pioneers helmet where that was done to a Prussian Wappen to accommodate the Bavarian mounting holes.

I did not know that you were talking in stahlhelme terms Paul. Your 52-54 cm size estimate makes sense now. 😊👍 Steve is totally correct, if this was Bavarian and a Prussian plate put on it, there will be extra holes in the shell.
