My other new find - Edo Kabuto Helmet

My collection is eclectic to say the least. In addition to the Italian Cabasset helmet, I recently bought this late Edo era Samurai helmet. This one likely dates to the 1840s or so. It probably wasn't used in combat, but it is a fine looking example.

That's neat. Is it made of metal, or is it lacquered leather?

It is metal and leather. The earlier ones were more lacquered leather but the later ones are lacquerer over metal. These were used in combat but the Samurai didn't do much fighting in the 19th century.

Very cool Peter, congrats! I think you should bring that to the SOS and get Gus to put it on so we can get some pics, certainly more interesting than that cowboy stetson he wears. :D

Splendid craftsmanship. Really impressive. Congratulations!
I suppose these fetch high prices too.
