I have a Prussian officer helmet (no liner) with the visors off at present. It has a beautifully hand written name inside, Kaempffer. I was hoping that perhaps some members who have the officer rank lists might be able to provide some information. Thank you in advance.

Hi Brian,

I initially thought this might be quite a common name, but if as spelt there are only a couple of real possibilities. The only infantry officer I can find albeit Landwehr, is an Hauptmann der Landwehr a.D. serving with the convalescent battalion at Wündsdorf. I assume we can rule out the Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde Regiment Nr. 1 Leutnant (killed as an aviator) and General der Infanterie Max Kaempffer!! There was also a Oberleutnant d.R. in Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 10 spelt with an Umlaut - Kämpffer, another in RIR 80.

Regards
Glenn

I rechecked the spelling of the name in the helmet, it is hand written as I spelled it...no Umlaut. I guess we have to presume that the helme belonged to the Landwher Hauptmann, D. Kaempffer. The wappen which fits perfectly to the shell is the typical Prussian officer version though. Thank you very much for looking up the name and providing this additional information.
