For some reason this bayonet really strikes me as evil looking–

R1----With a bayonet lug's all interchangeable? Was there a need to use a French rifle?–was It a conversion?

Badener-- have you been to the men's room at the Heart Attack Grill in Arizona? Someone had to tell them that size does not matter.

From the blade shape and crossguard configuration the bayonet appears to be a French Model 1866 saber bayonet.
Great Photo Joe, he looks like an older man, reservist perhaps?

I agree with Reservist.1, Chassepot bayonet for sure, loads of these were captured in 1870/1871 and were modified to fit German weapons, or, used by the Germans themselves on the captured Chassepot rifles unmodified. Often you see the scabbards with the French strap loop removed and a German elongated bayonet frog stud welded in place. Many times the scabbards are unit marked to Landwehr troops.

The unaltered French example on the left is blade dated 1868, and the modified German example on the right is dated 1867.
