NCO Chinscales.

Guys, - did Infantry NCO's wear flat or curved M91 chinscales? I never got this straight in my mind and, .....er, Bowman says they wore curved (I think?).

Possibly because there is no such thing as "NCO chinscales" Mike.

Its relatively straight forward, all men, private to Feldwebel could wear the issue Pickelhaube. After 1891 for Line Infantry, that meant leather chinstrap.

Garde Regts wore chinscales in garrison (normally) and leather chinstrap in the field.

All men, private to Feldwebel could purchase an Eigentums-helm, (also known as Extra-helm or Eigetumsstück) that could have either a chinstrap, or chinscales.

Does this help? CLICK HERE

Flat or curved has nothing to do with rank, it is dependant on the branch (Foot Troops, mounted, etc).

Thanks Tony, I recall reading your article on this ages ago but somehow this stuff all got mixed up in my mind. I've probably been watching that 'Velvet' video too much....anyway, I've just got a helmet that a chinstrap does not seem to quite fit on the posts and I wondered if it was because it originally had M91 chinscales? I think the post's are the slightly longer ones.

I'll post pics soon.....it's a nice one!
