hello all
my wife inherited this helmet from a great uncle.......no jokes please.
also have the cover for it.
have spent ages googling but can't find the exact one.
didn't want to ebay it without knowing what it really is.
any information would be appreciated please.
thanks & regards nigel

What you have here is a spike helmet for a reserve officer in a Prussian Jaeger zu Pferde (mounted scouts) cavalry regiment. Can you send more pictures? Inside and liner? "Lobster tail" (back part of the shell?

I agree with 911, but did they also have the trefoils on them like that in brass? Because it seems to be an M15?
I would also like to see more pictures of the helmet, so you can get a good reply from everybody here.
By the way my condolances for your wife's great-uncle's passing away.

Greetings, Coert :)

Yes, Coert, white metal shell, spike and eagle, yellow chinscales and trefoil: this was the rule for JzP regiments 1,2,3,4,7.
Bruno

Could this be a black body for officer ( or blued ) or is it just poor lighting
and a nickel body that needs a little cleaning ?

hi folks
thanks for the info, but still not there with full id, or are we ?
thanks for the condolances, my wifes great uncle died 33 years ago and has been in the loft ever since.
eagerly awaiting to know more. and has triggered a strange interest in Pickelhaubes.
appreciate your knowledge, not to be found anywhere else online !
regards Nigel

Hi Nigel, this forum is full of info about Pickelhaubes. I have only a Jäger zu Pferde M15, which has a different lobstertail, and also not with the rib in the middle, on the skull at the rear. This, combined with the stepped front visor makes it look like a Kürassier helmet, with a Jäger zu Pferde wappen on it. But then again I am no expert on these metall helmets... It seems to be a nickel skull thats needs to need a cleaning like Steve suggests.
Shame about the trim getting loose on the right of it, but it looks great I think.
I also like the cover, are there any markings on it, like size or D.R.P.?

I would not sell this if I were you!
I leave further comments to the guys here who are more knowledgeable than me.
I like it! :thumb up:

thanks Coert
wasn't going to sell it but seems a shame sitting in the loft.
will have look tonight when i get home for some more markings.
someone told my wife to take it to Sothebys but not sure about that.
regards Nigel

Hi Nigel, if you look for markings on it, also look beneath the liner, near the spike-base, you may find a makers mark and the date it was made. Also, if you remove the kokarden you might find any Issue marking's which might be of use for a definite ID.

Greetings, Coert :thumb up:

Coert, everything appears to be legit on this JzP officer helmet. There were no Kurassier helmets with all white metal shell and fittings. This cannot be anything but a JzP helmet. The shell is oxydized and plating is partially gone, therefore cleaning won't help much and can make it even worse. It also seems that the lobster tail came loose and moves up and down. This is easily fixed. As of regimental markings, they are virtually always absent from officer helmets. I would not even try to remove cockades. Old threads may break and you won't learn anything anyway. Maker's marks may be present, usually on the inner side of visor rims or inside the shell, between spike attachment bolts.
Cheers, Bruno

Nigel,
I think you have the full ID of your helmet now.
What else would you like to know?
Best wishes,
Bruno

Thanks for the info about it, a Jager zu Pferde it is.
I only have a enlisted one Bruno. I hope Nigel reads this before messing about with it. :thumb up:

Cheers, got it.
Reserve officer, Jaeger zu Pferde.
I'll have a closer look at it tonight and try to date it.
I promise not to clean it or sell it on ebay. But I may try the military guy in Arundel for a valuation.
I'll let you all know how we get on.
Thanks Everybody !!!
