Need some help with a WW2 German double-decal DAK helmet

Gents,

Any WW2 helmet experts out there? I can identify an original M1916 from 500 metres but I have not studied the WW2 versions closely enough.

I have attached some photos of the paint scheme and the two decals, I just need some honest opinions on originality. This has been offered to me as part of a collection.

I am expecting some more photos and I will post them as they become available.

Mike, have you heard of the forum called 'German Helmet Walhalla'? It is a forum of guys that primarily collect steel 3rd Reich lids. Highly recommend this group, a lot of very experienced collectors, and they don't seem to turn on each other as much as they do on the WA forum. Tony

My two cents: Mike, the helmet appears to be a M40, in which case the ventilation holes are an integral part of the shell and not separate inserts.

I believe the national colors decal was largely phased out by 1940.

You will need an expert opinion, but I would approach this one with caution.

Chas.

I have concerns with this one.
In addition to what Chas stated, the camo wear-patterns appear to be inconsistent with what I would expect on an original (based on these photos).

P.S. Here is where the stahlhelm gurus reside...

I am new to Ww2 peices as well , but the liner look to well condition and I also agree with roy and Chas .
These are so easily faked now or repaints .Scary stuff

Looks like the liner was away on vacation while the interior aged.

I grew up the son of an army officer during the 1950's and everyone I knew had nazi helmets. I had dozens and saw hundreds. I never saw a camo WWII German helmet until about ten or fifteen years ago. I saw and owned only one SS helmet. When I went to Germany in the yankee army in 1969 I saw hundreds and hundreds of nazi helmets painted blue or white on the heads of German laborers.

Where did all the blue and white painted helmets go? Where in the hell did all the hundreds of SS and camo helmets I now see come from?

Guys,

Thanks for all the advice. I have now declined on the DAK helmet and have also registered with the German Helmet Walhalla.

Mike

I have to agree that I would pass on this one. I would not accept the cameo. Also if your going to cameo a helm why leave the decals in the open especially the national shield with the Red. having been in combat I can tell you I would color my teeth black with a marker for better concealment if needed.
