New member and Pickelhaube question

Hello forum members.

I'm a new member and my name is Dorus.
I shifted collecting form WW2 German helmets and visor caps to WW1 German helmets and Pickelhaubes.
I was advised by Tony and Karel to join this forum since I'm a relative newby in this field of collecting.

I come to you in this first post with two question regarding a Pickelhaube I recently bought;
It's a Prussian Gard EM/ NCO pickelhaube made by Wunderlich Berlin.
It came with the red parade busch that can be unscewed.
I was told this red parade busch for a Prussian Pickelhaube stands for a 'Musiker'.

My first question is, is this a helmet for Garde Infantry or Garde Artillery?

On this my second question follows:
I'm looking to complete the Pickelhaube with either a spike top or ball top.
Which one belongs on this Pickelhaube.
Is there a forum member that can help me with a messing EM/ NCO spike top or ball top which can be scewed on?

There is a stamp on the rear visor but alas is not readable anymore...

The cockades are EM/ NCO, as is the chinstrap.
The top for the parade busch and the busch and funnel are also EM/ NCO.
I will make some extra photos and will try to upload them...

NB. The helmet is missing the Prussian cockade for now. The one that came with it was repainted. I'm now awaiting an all original example...

Regarding the stamps: just wet your finger and whipe over it. With a bit of luck they become readable.
Regarding the red Haarbusch: is this nylon? Should be horsehair....

Yes I tried wetting the stamp, but alas still unreadable for me.

Yes the hair busch appears to be nylon or something synthetic.
Does this mean the busch is not original?

Actually, the red hair seems to be real hair.
I just took one out and held a lighter to it... It burns like real hair and smells like burnt real hair.

Thanks for checking. Glad the Haarbusch is ok. No more Zippo-raids and sniffing!!!
Sure there are fine experts on this forum to tell more. Sure you removed the Wappen. Check for the "Ghost" of the Wappen on the front of the skull. And the back of the Wappen; and the way the Gardestern is attached to the Wappen. Are there double holes in the front of the skull(for the Wappen)...So much things to check...

I down loaded a few pics for you.

Deff a nice helmet . You should probably go with a spike top .

I will take the tritcher and hairbush for you.

No need to muck up the works and they just get in the way.

But it all depends on what will fit . Not all spike cones are the same diameter and as far as the screw stub they are different as well . One size DOES NOT FIT ALL. Spikes and balls.

These is a nice ghosting of the plate on the helmet. No extra holes.
The holes for the plate rings also have messing rings around them, and the plate is attached with the original leather strips.

Thank you for the compliment and the info.
I also found the helmet very nice.
I think I will keep the parade busch for now [-X

Is there anybody who can help me in finding/ buying a matching spike top in messing for EM/ NCO?
I have the measurements for the srew on the parade busch, so the potential spike will fit.

Hi Steve and thanks for your question!
I needed indeed an original Prussian state cockade since the one on the Haube was repainted.
I already found one and added it for completion...

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the questions. I see a slider vent on the rear spine which to me indicates infantry not artillery. The M95 arty spine does not have the slider and vent. So a Garde Infantry musician. Or spikes with removable tops do occasionally come up on EBay but they command higher prices due to rarity. Last, if you can decipher that rectangular ink stamp in the crown of the shell, we may be able to provide more information for you. The removal of the ink stamp on the rear visor is fairly common. Collector's feel this was done to prevent the enemy from identifying units if a piece of kit was captured.

Thank you for the reply, and the information provided... It helps a lot.
Also the removal of the ink stamp as common practice in the day is great to know, I didn't know that.
I will try to decipher to the ink stamp, and if I do I will inform the forum of course.
Checking eBay on a frequent base for a spine. Until now alas no dice :|
