New Prussian Artillery

Just picked up my latest pickelhaube today. Did not have much time to play with it as I had to head to the airport right after I got it. So far I love it.

I believe it's another pre-1880s helmet given the liner type and the wappen being fastened with screws. Exciting but maddening is the label that gives clues but no clear answers.

I can deduce it reads Einjährig-Freiwilliger across the top and at the bottom is 4.Bat.Ostfr......something. And the name has H----l...

Anyone a psychic? I want to think Hillman or something like that.

Anyone know what unit that might be? I presume Eastern Front (Ost.Fr) and 4th Battery of a regiment that was on the eastern front. Also has the Feld Artillerie chinscales

I'll take better pictures when I get back from my holiday. Only the label ones were taken by me.

I am pretty sure one of the dome studs is a replacement (and the draw string) but other than that it looks untouched.

Cheers.

Peter

Hi Peter,
Very nice helmet :)
"Ostfr." is the abbreviation of "Ostfriesisches", as in Ostfriesisches Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 62, the only "Ostfriesisches" regiment I could find.
Regards,
Lars

Wow! Thanks very much Lars.

My wife has ancestors from the Frisian region so that is kind of cool as well.

Hi Peter,
FAR 62 was in X. A.K. in 1914, Stab and I. Abteilung stationed in Oldenburg, II. Abteilung stationed in Osnabrück. Not sure to which Abteilung the 4. Batterie would belong. Source: "Führer durch Heer und Flotte", Friedag, 1914.
Even better when there is a family connection.
Regards,
Lars

My last entry, should have posted it all as one.
FAR 62 was raised on 25.3.1899, so maybe the screws on the Wappen are due to this being a private purchase helmet rather than being an older model? Same for the liner.

Congratulations,
looks like it all still together and hasn't been messed with at all, really like the feel of it just as it is. (y)(y)
