I picked this up today from a shop in Queens, New York. This came out of a very old collection, and was one of about a dozen helmets that had been bought decades ago from the Bannerman catalog. So likely this helmet was never actually issued.
It is the 1902 pattern dress helmet, and this version with the side vents was mostly used by National Guard units, notably the New York National Guard. This example features engineer side buttons, and the number 22 on the front of the plate. There were numerous regiments before the 1906 reorganization of the National Guard.
