Well, since it's been several days since anyone's posted any new and interesting postcards/photos to look at, I'll just post these. They are some new one I recently purchased. They may not be that interesting, but I can't let this topic just sit idle! 8-)

Adolf II Furst zu Schaumburg-Lippe

I've posted this one before, but since it's also Adolf of Schaumburg-Lippe I thought I'd post it again, this is him as crown prince (Erbprinz).

Mike,
Wolrad was not the Furst was he? Prince? I thought Freidrich was.
Waldeck was most interresting.
Joe,

Yes, you're correct, I was a bit off, he was a Prinz zu Waldeck und Pyrmont and not the reigning Furst. It's the old Furst/Prinz thing!

Viktor Wolrad Friedrich Adolf Wilhelm Albert Prinz zu Waldeck und Pyrmont (born 26 June 1892) was killed in action at Moors Lede, France 14 October 1914.

Otto: Thanks! I don't buy nearly as many as I used to, but I still find a few now and then that grab my attention! :D

Here's another new one that I forgot to post. Kaiser Wilhelm II's youngest son, Joachim Franz Hubert Prinz von Preussen. born 17 December 1890, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound 18 July 1920.

i have read many different accounts of why.

Your thoughts?
Joe,

I would love to hear what you've read. I only recall reading somewhere once that it was due to problems with gambling, drinking, etc. Was there something deeper?

Do you know where their schloss is? (Adolf of Schaumburg-Lippe) Is it in Buckeburg?
I looked up the family line in An Online Gotha and the first Furst, and numerous others (including Adolf II) were born in Bückeburg. Another popular birthplace seems to be Hagenburg.

I was there in '76, what a place. They had some really fantastic weapons & uniforms. Funny, back then I was into the stuff from the 30's-40's. Gotta dig out my old photo's. That was in the British zone back then, Ami's were OK there!

Thanks Mike for posting these fotos and creating a thread. I have some new fotos to post also. My problem is that our scanner gave up the ghost long ago and I have to take everything to school(my work) to get things copied. I scored a Wurtt soldat in dunkelblau wearing the Kaiser shooting prize at the latest Toronto militaria show. I weill try to get these posted. Brian

Mike,
Just Rumors
joachim.jpg

He was wounded by shrapnel in September 1914 and extreme ado was made of royal sacrifice in the press. Had a falling out with his father during the war. Killed himself in 1920. Rumor is due to his poor marriage to Marie Augusta of Anhalt. Other rumors swirled around gambling debts. Nagel in his memoirs remembers seeing him during the war and was struck by what he called a lack of a chin.

More rumors
The youngest, Joachim, born on 17 Dec 1890 in Berlin. He died on 18 Jul 1920 in Potsdam. He was also the subject of homosexual rumors. He was married unhappily to Princess Marie of Anhalt. They had one child, Karl Franz Joseph who would marry his step-grandmother's daughter. He was apparently not as strong as the other boys and his mother worried about him. Joachim appears to have been an impatient boy. He served in WWI as a calvary officer. He was woulded in the battle in the Masurian Lake District of East Prussia. He married Marie of Anhalt in 1916. After the Armistace in 1918, Joachim visited his father at Doorn. It was not a happy reunion. The former Kaiser was unhappy with his sons' behavior, including Joachim's gambling. Joachim eventually returned to Germany. He found it difficult adjusting to his reduced circumstances. His wife left him. He shot himself in 1920 at a hunting lodge near Potsdam. Considered his mother's favorite, it was thought this hastened her demise. Marie of Anhalt later adopted as a "son" who calls himself Prince of Anhalt and who is married to Zsa-Zsa Gabor.

Thanks, Joe, for the insight. To be honest, I had wondered about the possibility of homosexuality. Not trying to "judge a book by it's cover," but Joachim doesn't look overly masculine. Of course, neither did Crown Prince Wilhelm, but it was a different time and people behaved much differently than today.

Wow, I didn't realize that the elderly Princess Marie of Anhalt who adopted Zsa Zsa's husband was the same one that was married to Prince Joachim!

Brian,

I'd love to see your photos. Unfortunatley, I have to scan my cards at work too.
