Officer Helmet Liner Question

I have been looking at helmets trying to get a idea of what's right and wrong as I had not owned any great quanity to compare in person the differences , also other than a recent aquisition I had not owned a pickelhaube in many years.

One thing that has somewhat perplexed me was the liners in officers helmets. Most of the time I see the standard type with the leather that has tiny scalloped edges and silk inner liner , however I have also seen the EM type with the large tounges in officer's helms...

I assumed that this was just a style change and the earliest helmets might have the EM style and the later the fancier type , but occasionally I have seen the later officer type with the EM liner and it looks like an orig helmet with no modification..

What are some good guidelines on liners for Officer vs EM ?

I'm sorry if this seems like a novice question but I am am sadly a novice on this subject and just do not know what is correct..
