Hello, could anybody please tell me how the rear spine is assemled at the rear visor portion on an officer helmet (see attached picture). How is the button attached onto the spine?

Does anyone have a picture of the rear spine unattached?

How does the button come off?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam: That button has 2 prongs soldered to it which are folded back over the surface of the shell under the spine. If you want to remove it, you need to free up the spine from the shell then pull it gently back so that you can see those prongs. The spine will almost be vertical to the shell so that you can get at the button prongs and pry them vertical. Use a knife to get under the prongs and gently pry them up off the shell. Next use needle nose pliers to get the prongs into a vertical position, put your pliers down close to the shell and squeeze the prongs up right. Most officer spines, are fastened in three places....a bolt and nut near the top, prongs in the middle then either a domed split brad as in your case or a flat headed brad. There are some makers which put the helmet size numbers on this flat brad.

Most of the time the upper end of the spine is held down by the spike base, so you have to remove that to start carefully removing the spine. Once you get the spike / base removed, it's pretty self-explanitory. James has explained it all pretty well, but as he said, you have to be very careful.
