Officer’s shoulder boards of a Hauptmann

These boards have me asking, what unit wore number 18 and appears to be Hessen?

That is a very good question, there was an 18th (2nd Brandenburg) Field Artillery "General-Feldzeugmeister" but they were from the wrong Frankfurt they were from Frankfurt Oder in Brandenburg not Frankfurt am Main in Hesse and are also missing the flaming grenade.

Maybe someone created them not knowing the difference between the location of the two Frankfurts.

Just a guess.

At a guess, a Landwehr officer of the Grand-Ducal Hessian field artillery or Landwehr Pionier (both XVIII. Armeekorps) who wore an Arabic number "18" with red underlay.
