This photo took a bit of work in terms of restoration to get it to a half presentable stage. I stopped at the tattered edges as I think they frame the officer nicely and give the observer a true sense of the age of the original photograph.

Is he wearing a sword, or is it a dagger made from a cut down sword?

I do believe it's just a case of his I.O.D. being at such an angle that most of it is hidden behind his legs.
