What is this? Fireman?

I really couldn't say, perhaps a Beamte of some sort? .... another puppy on the train tracks.... (helmet looking to be rescued, but could it be? This is one of those times when a 'sniff of the leather' would give a LOT of information).

:D Ron

It certainly looks like a genuine old helmet. I dont know what it is and would like to. It is a puppy for sure tho I think, just waiting to be scooped up and cuddled :D

I agree, it seems authentic and the wappen is very interesting but I don't have a clue what it is.

Regards,

Edwin

Guys, does anybody know what this is? Ive been through all my books and cant find anything. Is it police or fire maybe? I was wondering if the wappen is not related to the helmet, but it all seems patinated in the same way. It does look like the real deal though, as in genuine and not made from bits and pieces. The only slight concern I have with the pics is the fact that on some of them it looks like it has been smeared with liquid mud.

Gents,

I believe this is an Oldenburg helmet of some sort. Please check the middle coat of arms in the link below:

It doesn't look like a military wappen. That being said it could be a fireman, a police or as a very wise man had said a Hamster Inspector...

I was going to bid just for a restoration project and a helmet with an interesting wappen, but I'll leave this one to others. Very interesting indeed! :) It does look like the body has been smeared with something... to me it looks like paint of some sort, maybe latex based?

( I believe hamster inspectors had a tiny silver hamster at the base of the wappen)

Who knows what would be on the top of that base!? A lot of different types of spikes and do-dads.

:D Ron

Me too !

I think that's not a military helmet. Perhaps Feuerwehr, Police or Beamte;
Patina is the same, but not sure the wappen are matching. Old replacement ?

Gents,
look at your Larcade Volume I, pages 87-88.
This helmet was worn between 1867 and 1870 in the Oldenburg IR 91.
This Wappen was the first Oldenburg Wappen pattern (1843-1870) till the AKO of the third of March 1870 gave the OJR91 a new plate, the Linien-Adler with small Oldenburg Wappen in the middle.
Starting 1843 till 1867, this particular Wappen was worn on a very particular (ugly)helmet which had a very specific spike, directly fixed on the skull, without spike base.
Starting the 15th of July 1867 till 1918, the OJR 91 adopted the prussian spike helmet style.

Sadly I don`t possess a copy of lacarde (though I keep looking and hoping) I find no info on this helmet in any of my other books though.
Are you saying that the wappen is not for this helmet and that it was only worn on the ugly one with no spike base?
I know the visor would be right for this period as they went to a round type when they adopted the line eagle with the oldenburg plate. If this wappen does not belong on this helmet then its not a puppy on the tracks but an old put together?
Either way, 600+ dollars is too high for me on a helmet that needs so much work

OK for Larcade, but there is just a bad drawing of the 1843 helmet, and its not possible to see how was exactly the plate. And the the rear spine and chinstrap attachment of Ebays Helmet are not as for a "1860" one.

And, as I wrote, I still think to a Gendarmerie helmet, worn till... 1923 !

Did Gendarmerie have removable spikes and square cut visors, or is this as you think a helmet with the wappen replaced?

Philippe this is an interesting suggestion but the shape is not at all that of a helmet from the 1860-70's. In addition an OJR helmet would have flat chinscales. These are domed.
According to the text above, the spike should be fluted. This will be hard to find!..
Bruno

Yes Bruno,
I think you may be right...Very difficult because without any comparaison possibility... :(
I completely forgot the fact that the shape did not work with a helmet which was worn between 1867-1870... it should have no rear brim too... 8-[
