I hate to list this while Joe is on Vacation, but I could not wait to show it.

Just got it this afternoon, earlier type Prussian Artillary helmet marked to F.A.R. 59.

Nice Pearl ring on spike base, with smaller type Artillary ball.

All original helmet with original Kokarden and Chinstrap all in excellent shape.

Now for the best part, on the inside of the brass visor trim, is the maker mark stamped into the Brass, H.CLEMEN.

Front eagle has earlier type screw back posts.

Another interesting part of this helmet is the rear spine, a split pin attaches it to the rear visor!

Sorry for the dark photo's, raining for days and had to shoot the photo's inside.

James

I am pretty sure it is a M95, but some things just a little differant, I am wondering if it might be a private purchase?

You have two features on your helmet that are only found on issue helmets; the issue pattern liner and issue stamping. Those would never be found on a private-purchase helmet. James do you remember a while back I wrote an article here called "re-thinking issue dates"? I argued there that when a new model came out, like the M1891, the next day the entire Army was not wearing M1891; the change would have taken many years. I have an example just like yours with M1871 pattern Kugel and have seen many others. I believe now, that some troops like Artillery, may not have adopted the M1887 spike neck (without Perlrings) for many years after that date. So a helmet like yours with M91 posts (adopted in 1894 by Artillerie) with the M71 Kugel pattern is absolutely correct. The Artillerie may not have simplified the Perlring until many years later.

As well Artillerie, specifically the FAR, wore curved chinscales right up until 1914 and into the war. So your helmet was used at least up until that time. Are the M91 mounts thick (3mm)? Like I explain here, about half-way down? >> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/hp/chin.htm

Last, M95 would have five vent holes on the neck, and loops for the chicken. Yours appears to be a first issue to the Artillerie in 1894 possibly? T

Tony-

You are correct again, sorry I forgot about your article, I did read it awhile back.

You are correct the M91 posts are thicker, just like your article says!

Somedays I think I forget more then I learn!

Thanks for putting me straight and that explains some of the older features!

I love the helmet.

Hi James:

Beautiful helmet. Congratulations! To illustrate Tony's point. Here is mine.

Chas- great helmet!

interesting to me, and also echos what Tony was talking about, that the changes where gradual, and looks like they did running changes on these helmets.

I have an extra set of chinscales to fit this one, but I decided to leave it as I found it.

My favorite part is the pearlrings and the makers mark.

James,

I'm going to sound like a squeaky wheel, but you know what I want! May I please have permission to put your photo of the marking up on the maker's Mark list? That is the only maker I know that put his name on the front visor. :tongue3:

Joe- great photo!!

Yes, go ahead and use the photo of the makers mark, or let me know if you need a better shot of it!
