One bad apple

The old saying "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch" certainly holds true here. This dealer has several Pickelhaubes for sale currently on Ebay, and for the most part they all look pretty good. I was watching a couple of them myself, but because the prices were so lavish I had not made a bid. I then saw this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Model-1860-German-Prussian-Officers-Pickelhaube-/301668170483?hash=item463cd2faf3:g:T~EAA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Makes me question every other item he has for sale. I deleted the two I was looking at from my list.

So I take it you have heard of them before? I have seen their stuff but it is always so excessively priced that I never paid attention. They listed one this time that I was really interested in, but after seeing this I knew they couldn't be trusted. I got lucky and dodged a bullet this time.

There is something odd here beside the fake. I searched this seller's 'other auctions' and this helmet doesn't appear. At first, I thought it was because I was referencing this from the bogus helmet's page, so I tried it from another they have up for sale and still no dice. Something's rotten all 'round with this one.

I'm sure I've commented on another thread that even the stuff which does seems to be genuine is often not in great condition and is way over-priced even if it were in perfect condition. This applies to British and German items alike. Avoid!

After I read your post I did the same thing, looked at a different item they had for sale, and there is something weird here. I looked at a couple of the other items and visited their store, as well as "see other items" and the bogus helmet is not there. The other stuff looks pretty legitimate, however overpriced, but this definite fake (made in England in the late sixties and seventies by the looks of it) was not shown anywhere. I'm not going to lose sleep over it but I wonder if they know?

I don't like repeating myself, but anything that is from the UK is suspicious to me :-P

I am from the UK but Edwin is right, scrutinize everything extra hard from here, I don't watch this sellers stuff if it is real it's all too expensive anyway, he has some sort of mocked up Saxon nco helmet and has done for 6 odd years now the sky high price tag on a fake means he will have it for at least another 6 more.

I do not quite agree with Edwin. I think that very few of these ebay items from the UK are suspicious.

There is indeed probably nothing wrong with the vast majority of German imperial militaria that are offered on ebay from the UK. However, I guess the thing is that many of the fake haubes that are discussed here were made in 60's or 70's in the UK and therefore I am always extra cautious with German militaria on ebay from the UK. Nevertheless, its always good practice to convince yourself that the item you are looking at on ebay is truly authentic.

Apologies if I was not clear enough, Edwin. I meant that most of these items (referring exclusively to WW1 headgear) are not "suspicious" because they are just obvious plain crap ("suspicious" infers there is a doubt, a question)...

I agree, I tried to put it mildly in order not to offend anyone :D
