One Pretty Expensive M1895 Chinstrap!

No matter how real it looks--and this one does look like the real deal--and no matter how badly you need one, I think there should be limits to what a collector would be willing to spend on what's after all no more than a very old strap of leather!

Almost $300 for this one! :o

Hey Keith,
I wasn't gonna bid anyway since I'm looking for M15 versions but thought it was nice to watch.
I never expected price would climb this high though!

  When I started collecting, you could buy a near mint officer's helmet for that! Me thinks people are getting a bit :tongue3: :tongue3: (crazy) out there.

:D Ron

I honestly think that prices will continue to sky-rocket due to the 100th anniversary coming up in 1914. I really wish that I would have started collecting as a child, because I have dropped some serious dough in the last few years on stuff.

I got a nice M95 chinstrap on ebay.fr a few months ago for 80 euro but $300 for this one is quite ridiculous.

Regards,

Edwin

You're right Alan: It's all relative to how much collectors want it at the time of auction.
eBay never reflects the actual value of things. Collectibles often get overevaluated and sometimes underevaluated.
But still, there should always be limits beyond which collectors should stop bidding. This is a piece of strap after all which is still fairly common...
I remember yours Edwin; you got it for a reasonable price and it looked great. Good things happen to those who wait :)
I now need to find me a genuine M15 strap for less than 80 EUROS; anybody here willing to dismantle their haube and sell the parts? :P

Speaking of ridiculously overpriced chinstraps... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Original-WWI-Prussian-Bavarian-Leather-Chinstrap-White-Copper-Hardware-/290628039040" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

All it takes is one auction and everybody jumps on board. The same thing happened with Stuart light tanks. A pair of idiots pushed the market from $50,000 or so to $120,000 with one auction. NOW, they're all asking $250,000 for the little buggers.

Don't make me laugh :o The said thing is that there is probably someone out there who is willing to pay for this :x

Hi,

I'm not sure why the seller Chuck Roelens calls the fittings on the chinstrap "white copper". Maybe that's what the finish is made of on the metal fittings (???white copper paint???)

Chuck's one of the good guys, and deals in original items. He's on the W.A. forum, and is an advanced collector of Imperial stahlhelme & USMC items.

Looks like it's a very nice condition wartime strap w/the subdued metal fittings.

Someone may go for it. I personally wouldn't, but if someone really needs/wants one that bad, who knows?
