Opinions on Helmet and Mark on Back

Good day. Looking for opinions on this helmet. Does anyone know what that mark on the back is? Have you seen this kind of liner before with that marking?

Thinking of buying it.

Any comments appreciated.

Peter

Hi Peter
I have no idea what is the colour marking on the back of the exterior helmet.

Liner is by otto which is a liner and chinstrap maker. On leather band, the same maker has its maker stamp on the leather band,

I ended up buying it. I’ll post better pictures when I receive it. Always wanted a Camo helmet.

Peter

Yes, Otto K marked his chin straps distinctly as well. I remember years ago when they first showed up collectors wondered whether they were original or not? Some research was done and it was discovered that he also made all sorts of camping and outdoor gear as well so perfectly legit.

Hi Brian
Based on your reply Otto K was making quality reproduction leather items for restoring period equipment. Or am I mistaken?
Thanks
John

No John, Otto was producing these during the war, they are not reproductions, totally original to the period.

Just had a thought. Those colours on the back look like "yellow-red-yellow" so maybe an unofficial Baden mark? Same colours as the Kokarden.

Peter

You might be very right assuming that Peter.

Here a picture of a Badenspange I have in my collection.

Okay so not proven yet and only a theory, but I couldn't resist getting a Baden Medal set. This one is interesting as I have never seen this type of setup witt the small "spange" type of ribbons. I haven't received them yet but have some good pictures.

Even if the mark turns out to be for something else I didn't have a Baden set anyways.

I think we all have the Pickelhaube collecting virus but I now have the "accessorize the helmet" virus....

Received the helmet today and have attached some more pictures. Looks like the third pad holder may have been added later (not sure how much later) and curiously it has no pad holder. Also, someone somewhere along the line reinforced the leather pad holders with some kind of tin wire. Probably what saved the pads from deteriorating and falling out. Still love it!

A very nice helmet! I also like the medalspange you bought to accompany it.
You are not alone in collecting accessories for the Pickelhaubes and steel helmets.. I have a lot of medals, spanges etc, to accompany them, next to an extensive feldpostcard collection..
