Opinions please on this helmet.

Nothing to see that sugests a red flag but the chinstrap should be a leather one instead chinscales
Overall a nice helmet

Jonas

This is exactly why I was asking for opinions about it. I was not sure about those scales.
So I started wondering what else could be wrong...
Thanks for your reply Jonas!

Greetings, Coert :)

Hold on a moment, chinscales are just fine on M95 helmets. They wore leather chinstrap in the field, and for dress chinscales on OR(other ranks) or enlisted helmets.

They look just fine to me.

James

James is right. Flat chinscales are perfectly legit on this helmet.
(even curved chinscales should work: Garde Train...)

Thanks for your comments gentlemen! I read somewhere that scales were used on enlisted helmets, but just was not sure about them.
I will wait for the photo's I asked the seller, if they are good I will buy it. If I have anymore questions about them I will ask here.
And post the pictures, so I can be positive about it. So far I like this helmet! It seems to lack the kokarden, but I will find them somewhere.

Have a nice evening all,

No double holes, the spike seems to unscrew for a trichter.
Apart from the missing kokarden, and no visible marking's I think it is legit.
So I think I will buy this one. What about it's value?

Any comments are very welcome!

Greetings, Coert :)

Coert, if the spike indeed unscrews for a Trichter (which of course makes a lot of sense with a Guard helmet), there is an extra legitimate reason for your helmet having Schuppenketten. If worn with a parade bush (things I heartily dislike, by the way, and in my real collectors days used to describe as: "das haariges Ungeheuer" for hair of "gerupftes Huhn" for feathers :D), the helmet would also be equiped, at least for the occasion, with Schuppenketten.

So depending on possible markings (or lack of same!) there are various options. Markings might indicate a Guard Train helmet in which (as already suggested) round Schuppenketten would be required. Markings might also indicate a foot Guard regiment, where the present flat Schuppenketten is alright - at least under certain circumstances. And if there are no markings at all (as the photo's seem to suggest)... well, consider it a private purchase (Eigentumsstück) that was bought with Schuppenketten. There you go :D !

For value... I've been too long away from serious collecting to give you an educated opinion. I can only tell you what I myself would be willing to pay if I had the money: I would gladly lay 900 - 1000 Euros on the table and consider myself a lucky bahstud. But again: that is my personal evaluation of what the helmet would be worth to me - it may have no sensible relationship to its "general collectors value".

Good looking helmet, mate!

Coert,
Go for it. I would estimate $1100 to $1400 US for this helmet, retail.
I would buy it, in a heartbeat.

Great helmet and very nice to have those "correct" scales! I see no problems either, go for it! :thumb up:

Thanks for all the reply's gentlemen.

I went for it, and bought it. Later this week I will pick it up, and money will change hands!
More over, I asked about the missing Kokarden, the seller realized he still had them in a drawer in his house, so now it is complete, with it's kokarden, which are genuine, from what I saw on his picture. As far as I can see anyway.

I paid 900 euro's for it, so the low estimate of SkipperJohn.
I will post pictures of it when later this week it will be at my place.

Thanks for all the help gentlemen, I really appreciate it.
What a good forum this is.. :)

A very nice piece, congratulations, a plus to any collection. Enlisted men helmets are my favorite.

Hi Coert, you lucky bahstud you (wide grin)! I wrote: "I would gladly lay 900 - 1000 Euros on the table" and I'm very glad you managed to get it for the lower end of the estimate including (!!!) the original Kokarden! Good work, well done! This is a very good buy you did - I'm happy for you, congratulations, my friend! :bravo:

Additionally, I like the way the Wappen follows the contours of the helmet. Especially with this wide-winged Guard eagle one often encounters wings kind of "sticking out". Yours is very good, Coert! :thumb up:

Thanks everybody!

I am very happy, and cannot wait untill it is here in my house.
I also like the way the wappen fits the helmet Jaap, it seems it was never taken off the helme.
If you look at the pictures you can also see the ghost of it on the shell..
I feel very lucky to have bought it at a good price, \:D/

I can't wait to put the kokarden back on, and fit the schuppenkette the way it should.
Boy it will look great with his friends!
