Original Cockades?

How do you tell.? 6604270075.
To me the National looks...maybe OK, but the State one looks dodgy - different size serrations and a shiny back. I cant really tell original from faux cockades without handling them, and even then it's difficult sometimes.
How do you guys do it, and would you buy 'em from photographs?

A long time ago, in the old forum somebody actually conducted a test. We were all given a series of national cockades to choose from photographs. Every single person who tried made a mistake from the photographs. I think Tony came closest of all but not an easy call. Some are fairly obvious. Others are more easily determined when you hold them. Some collectors look for cracking in the paint as a sign of originality. It's a good question that I am far from getting right all the time.

Hi Joe:

You have a long memory. I was the culprit. Here is the picture:

Three are good and three are bad. In fairness, the photo makes it far more difficult to differentiate (holding these in you hand, there would be almost no doubt).

Mike, I think the Reichskokarde is good. The paint on the Preußen doesn't trouble me as much as the shape; the points are rather "underdeveloped." However, it is far less common to encounter a perfectly matched set than this type of mix and match.

Chas.

ok I will play, top left, top right and middle bottom

I must have missed this one the first time, i do not remember this post

James

I remember this one, and I am not even going to try, as I remember, I did not do too well the first time.
Gus

I will go for top left, top right and bottom left. I think that the red comes in two shades, one is the red/orange colour and the other is the dark red like in bottom left.

Mike is the winner. The bottom right Kokarde is a recent Great War Militaria reproduction. GWM did a good job of capturing the orange red color, but the Kokarde would not pass close scrutiny. The middle top Kokarde is one of Rudy Sauro's reproductions, and the middle bottom, a repro of unknown origins made of brass.

Congratulations, Mike!

Chas.

Chas,

Outstanding result!! I understand that first prize in this competition was the complete set of six kokarden. Please send by airmail, wrapped in tissue paper and sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard for protection. In fact, just send me the three good ones, you can distribute the others to second and third place in the competition.

Hey Mike, the last time Chas ran this compatition, he gave away a very nice Pickelhaube, I think you need to check the rules, as I think you deserve the Haube.

Hey Pete:

Here it is. I purchased this from AGM as a set with a Württemberg Kokarde.
