This shell looks as if it's been painted. Weren't these blued? Any thoughts?

:D Ron

If I am not mistaken 1915 models were blued but previous models not. There is a similar 1905 helmet currently offered by weitze, which is not blue but brownish. But I could be wrong here :D

The Weitz one turns out blue on my monitor, however, the brown may be due to the fact that they photo'd it on an orange (!?) background.. maybe to compliment the bluing? Anyway, I'm suspicious of the helmet on ebay also because of all of the chipping inside and none outside. The wear isn't consistent, or just doesn't add up (I know some helmets are great outside and worn inside and vice-versa), but this one just doesn't sit right with me.

Also, I really don't know if they ever painted JzP helmets either... my gut feeling is that they didn't. My M15 JzP is blued, and painting is easier than bluing, so I'd suspect earlier helmets were also blued (?).

Another painted one:

I'll keep looking.... :)

The liner in that one (http://www.collectorsmilitaria.com/a_ni" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... 012411.htm) appears to be new pigskin.
The seller describes the replacement bird as a Prussian officer's plate. :-"

yup, he states it's not the right plate and is a new liner, but again, another painted helmet, which I think isn't correct?

Guys, I'm probably not adding much but from what I've learned (from Tony I think): Jäger zu Pferde M1915 EM helmets were black manganese parkerized; an immersion process (developed in 1869) requiring the solution to be heated to about 190-210⁰C with a dipping time that could range from 5 to about 45 min...

No, that's good info. Parkerizing is something that's common to modern weaponry, it's a zinc or magnesium phosphating process to prevent corrosion. Still not a coat of paint :)

Congrats Stephane; let's hope everything turns out fine with it as it sure looks nice!

On attend les photos! :guns:

Thanks Ron :) ! I suppose the shell was a bit corrugated and someone painted it black... Or it's a period painting to avoid the gliding (reflets) ? I liked the soldier's label inside,... And I miss the silver fitting model, I have a very nice brass fitting one, marked after the 8th regiment as always.... But the silver fitting type seems even scarcer in good condition,
