Papercloth Sandbags and Strap = Grenade Bag Kit

One of my recent finds, a pair of incredibly well preserved original WW1 German sandbags with carrier strap, all made of papercloth. The strap is cut to length so that each end could be attached to one corner of the sandbag. This would allow the setup to be worn around the neck. It is quite a bit thicker than the papercloth carrier straps found on gas mask canisters.

The previous owner believed this set to be an original grenade bag kit, and I agree. This arrangement is a commonly encountered version of several other variations I've seen in period pictures.

This picture I found on the internet shows a soldier with a grenade bag made of sandbags. In this case they are fastened by a length of cord.

That is a great photo showing the most basic construction of a pair of grenade bags.
