Too bad that Kurassier has 2 LARGE Reichs Cockades, has what looks to be a very dry & freil liner and is missing 2 spike base rivets!

But since these are (unissued/unused) War Bond helmets, wouldn't this mean there's a high chance parts like cockades, chinstraps and feldzeichen (on both the Tchapka & Shako) could be fakes or add-ons (not original to helmet)?

You're probably right RON.

War bonds are usualy "naked" when they come to collectors.
So some of them complete them with copy adds-ons.

:-k

It's the feldzeichen (here on both the Tchapka & Shako) that are still hard for me to assess since these are often missing hence faked.

Again you're right,

Nowadays find a good feldzeichen is VERY VERY hard.
It's very well faked part...

These feldzeichen look good to me. They look properly sewn correct in the back and they don't look "superfuzzed". Asking for a close up photo, won't hurt.

I am bidding, just not sure which one yet! :-k

I got some 'closeups' from the seller. They're not that high in resolution so I couldn't tell much. These seem a bit 'fuzzy', don't they?
Besides, the seller's reply casts more doubt in my mind: "The helmets came from an old collection (with the collector having passed away) so I do not know if the field badges are replacements or not. I tested them under a UV black light and they do not glow, but even if the field badges are replacements the helmets alone are superb pieces"...

IMHO, these would be very hard to complete with real field badges afterwards and starting price is way too high to risk bidding this way... [-(

The closeups aren't amazing but I don't see the "fuzz". It is good to know the seller is at least cooperative with sending pictures.

Yes finding a original field badge is very very difficult but you never know, sometimes they pop up around. As for the starting price they seem to be "around" what I have seen for some of these items on dealer websites and they go fast! I think it will be a 3-4 bid item as opposed to a 20 bid item that starts at $1.

Also in my opinion condition is everything, so you might expect to pay a little more for some of these items also and then you have to figure in the rarity of the item. They are wartime and I see a lot more "torn up" helmets on Ebay than I do "mint" items.

Hi Chris,
I agree that condition is important for helmets that are almost a century old however since the liners on these are near mint, these are definitely (unissued) War Bond Helmets which would imply they never saw action/were not 'there; somehting that would deter alot of collectors I know...

I was going to bid on this one too since I don't have a Tschapka yet but if everyone's planning on bidding, this one's going overboard as it already started way too high...
I guess it's always tough to build your own collection; much easier to inherit one and simply undust it from time to time... :-? But then it wouldn't be much fun now, would it?

I stand corrected; the Tschapka didn't climb as high as I thought it would :-k ... It doesn't have an M15 chinstrap and is missing the drawstring but other than that, it looks great (provided the Feldzeichen is real).
Sold for $1,301; only $100 more than the Shako... Weird no one bid on it at the last minute.
Also weird no one tried to snatch that JZP which I thought looked awesome/almost flawless. :-?
Is the lucky winner among us? [-o<

But wait....there's more:

This guy sure knows where to find them!
Although this one has a nicer outer shell (no paint loss to the upper part of the mortar board), it seems the trimmings & chinstrap are M95 brass while the plate--which is missing the Guard Star--is grey M15 steel... Not to mention that feldzeichen again which could be an old copy (the seller isn't sure and the fact it doesn't glow under a black light could only date it back to the late 40s or 50s if I'm not mistaken).

No grommets on the plate holes?
The field badge looks good.
With a non-detaching mortarboard, brass trim might be expected.

Battlefieldbooks are good guys, not far from me and come up with nice stuff from time to time. Prices are high, but look like good Bond helmets.

This Tschapka is ok without the garde star! have one just like it.

James
