Photo Request-WWI German Ammo Boxes

Hi. I need some photos of WWI German Ammo Boxes (not the cartridge containers the soldiers wore), especially for the following:

1) M1898 Mauser (Gewehr 98 Rifle)-- was loaded from a 5 round 7.92mm stripper clip.

This was the standard German infantry rifle of WWI.

2) MG 08 Ammo Boxes

3) MG 08/15 Ammo Boxes

The photos can be of replicas, from museum, or from WWI photos.

It would be great if you can show the top, bottom, and sides of the containers, if at all possible, but I'll be pleased with whatever type of photos you have available.

All I have been able to really find that is sort of related on the net is a MG 08 water coolant container:

I appreciate your help.

Thanks,

Hi Gamburd,

What exactly do you want?
I happen to reproduce cartboard ammo boxes for rifle Mauser 98. Those are reproductions of the carton box, containing three strips of 5 rounds, as I found on photograph.
I reproduce the midwar version as well as the prewar version. The prewar version is an approach, this is: about 90% of the reproduction is true, 10% is an estimation. It's composed from a few examples and I had to fill the "gaps".

The "1916" version (label is reproduced from an original "1917" label, I just redated it for it had to fit in a "Somme" scenario.)

This is the composed "1914" version. I'm not sure about a few cifres on the label. Also the cotton ribbon had in fact a different "loop" as shown on these early pics. I have to remake them, but what you see is a good approach. Note: the color blue is in fact to bright; I'm still looking for the correct one. It ought to be the same blue as the boxes for the rifle M1888)

For both examples: the cartboard as used on these examples was my first attempt; I now use the same type of cardboard as was used (and is used today!) for ammo boxes.
So these are first attempts, I'm working at the moment on better examples. In a few days I can deliver you some better pics if you please.

Hi Erik de Bruin,

Thanks a lot for these photos!

I'm working on a PC video game modification to make a First World War version of a WWII video game.

I'm not getting paid anything to make the game modification; it is strictly volunteer work.

The game modification, called "Iron Europe: 1914-1916" and "Iron Europe: 1917-1918", will be free downloadable games for anyone who owns the PC video game "Red Orchestra: Ostfront 1941-45" by Tripwire Interactive.

So, I'm looking for Gewehr 98, MG 08, and MG 08/15 Ammo Crates (the actual crates they were shipped in).

Also, I'm looking for the crates that the Imperial German Army used to ship early war Kugel grenades and Stielhandgranates from the various years.

Then, our Modeller, will make a computerized model box based on the photos we can find.

Here's an example of a cigar box:

We are still developing our website:

If you would like me too, I would be happy to mention your Replica business in a Thread at our Forum if you want me to; you can PM me here or write the information so people can contact you below.

Here's some information I found at the Great War Forum, and which I'd like to share here about the Patronenkaste 15:

There were a few types of German WW1 MG ammo boxes produced that had a 500 round capacity but the most common box is the Patronenkaste 15 with a 250 round capacity. They are easily identified as the handle is offset to one side making it easier carrying 2 together in one hand.

Here is a photo of one Patronenkaste 15 from my MG08 display.

The dimensions are 357mm x 177mm x 85mm

I have had a much easier time finding information about British ordnance:

When I like to know how these items looked like I'm going to a museum, but that's easy talk for a dutchman, being neighbour to Germany!
But there's another way: visit http://www.ebay.de (German ebay) and find your way: go to Sammeln und Seltenes (Collectables)- Militaria-1871.1918-Reich. !!

This is a german ammo box for light calibre ammo (bought at Zonnebeke by a friend of my)
