Gentlemen,
I do not think that I will be able to acquire an original chinstrap to complete my M15 that is within my price range so I am exploring alternatives. There is a very reputable leather worker from another forum who can make a good quality leather strap using original metal fittings. As I am not able to locate any original steel fittings, I have found the following brass fittings for sale. Are they original and how bad would it look for an M15 to be fitted with a chinstrap that has brass fittings.

Ricardo I know someone who can help you with at least replica field grey fittings that you could make your m15 chinstrap with. Or even a replica M15 chinstrap. PM me.

George Birringer in Pittsburgh, PA, used to make excellent chinstraps. It seems like he might've been using some original tooling...but that was back in 1994 or so.
 
Don't pay unreal price for it. If you need this ebay items very very, a can offer the same original items to you for symbolic price + spipping. Shipping should be approx 5 $
 
Perhaps I was lucky am not sure but sometimes it pays off to be patient because it took me almost one year to get an authentic M15 chinstrap through ebay for 68 euro's. However, I have seen others go for absurd prices.

I would not put a brass fitting chin strap on your Baden M15 Ricardo, it's just not right. The other thing about the Latvian dug stuff, is that it is all pitted from being in the ground. If you clean it, then the pitting becomes even more evident as it shows up black against the brass. Yes, I have bought strap fittings from this dealer but the problem is always the same. God knows, without the Latvians and their dug findings plus repro wappen there would not be much for sale on Ebay!
 
brass fittings coloured on gray colour some times was finds with M1915 pickelhaubes from ground :) Of course not right, but possible.

Thanks for that information Leone. It makes sense, there are always regulations and then there is what needs to be done in the field during wartime.
 
One last bit of advice Ricardo, no matter which way you go...old fittings new leather or complete new repro strap, wet the leather and then pin it tight on a head form to dry. This will give you a nice tight fit at the M91 fittings and a nice rounded profile to the strap so that it fits well on the shell. Repro straps with gaps at the M91 fittings and a loose fit just scream repro and look sloppy.
 
Gentlemen,
This is all excellent info. I have seen helmets with black chinstraps and some with brown. Is black most appropriate for the M15?
