Hi Tom:

The helmet looks good to me. The domed spike base retainers and vaulted non-enameled Garde star make this a textbook example of a private purchase Diensthelm. For more information on this subject:

I believe the helmet represents 2. Garde Dragoner Regiment Kaiserin Alexandra von Rußland. However, the domed brads should be gilt/brass.

I hope this helps.

Chas.

Hello Tom. I saw this a few days ago and thought it looked good too, I wish I was holding the kind of folding to bid on it. Good luck if you decide to try for it.

Hi Tom:

Your post is back! I trust there are no objections to my having edited the content.

Best regards,

Chas.

Did someone say Garde Dragoner?

Thats a great looking piece Tony. Can we see a profile view? It seems to have a very shallow skull to it. Is it an earlier shell that has been cut down and is it dated?

Im also pretty curious in it... can't weem to find it annywhere on the bunker site... :???:

Will we be seeing more in the near future ?

a textbook example of a private purchase Diensthelm

I just filled out Maggie's FAFSA and am in a mood to stir the pot.
Looking at private purchase I guess you could have OYV, Fähnenjunker, Fähnriche, Officer. I guess it is possible for anyone else to buy one.

A Diensthelme in my mind is a low rate everyday type of helmet for one of the types above. Regularly, (yes a generalization) a Diesthelm might have for example some or all of these: lower quality corpus, leather liner, unlined brims.

I don't think this is a Diensthelme....and what are 55mm cockades doing on it?

Hi Joe:

When I wrote "Diensthelm," it was because I was under some pressure to answer Tom's question in a succinct and timely fashion. In case you missed it yesterday, this topic contained several posts from a certfiable nut job, who has since been evicted from the forum.

With respect to Tom's new helmet, the issue at hand was "to bid or not to bid." As one can see, all that would be required to upgrade this to a true Offizier helmet would be star stud retainers and an enameled Garde Stern. Undoubtedly, this would be one of the simplest conversions ever.

Of course, you are correct, the helmet is more likely Einjährigfreiwilliger or cadet.

Chas. :D

P.S.
Nice lid Tony
