Looks real to me. It seems to have all of the correct Hessen characteristics for this Regt. I have never seen the 2 piece Hessen officer style kokarde before and if this is a model 1857 it legitimately could only have one kokarde present ie the Hessen one. Brian

Iam less willing to give it thumbs up and would want more pictures. The rosettes appear round. Hessian trichters were very different, I would like to see a picture of the stem. Also the shell front and back of plate. That cockade seems unique for Hesse.

Joe, from what I can see on my monitor the trichter is correct for Hesse. Now that you have brought it up , the chinscale rosettes do not seem to be curved to match the convex cavalry style scales. Has anyone else seen this style of Hessen 2 piece kokarde before? Brian

Greetings all!

It is interesting what different people notice. I have examined the photos under greater magnification, with the help of Photoshop and some interesting things come out:

1. Rosettes - Look curved to me.

2. Trichter - The photo with the haarbusch in place, when lightened, shows a correct Hessian-style trichter.

3. Kokarde - This is similar to the style in Randy Trawnik's book, maybe he can give us some guidance.

Here is where it gets curly:

4. Spike - Look carefully at the photos of the spike on its own. I swear I am seeing a threaded rod coming out the top of the spike in the front-on view. In fact, in all of the profiles, something is visible above the top of where the brass spike ends.

Cheers,

Laurie

Laurie,

I see what you mean. The two lateral views are carefully cropped and airbrushed to remove this feature.

Hmmmm

Good observation!!!

i can see the threaded part as well and the bad cropping to get it out of the other pics makes the spike from the front look more obvious.
I am not even remotley knowledgable on these parade style helmets ,I assume that a large threaded rod would not be out the top of the spike.

Hello again,

I can't imagine that someone would be allowed to report for parade with a shoddy looking piece of equipment like a helmet spike with a bolt sticking out its top.

It occurred to me that the threaded bit at the top of the spike could be there to receive the top (inverted cone) of the plume trichter, that what we are actually seeing in those images is the bottom part of the Hessian style trichter.

His photos imply that the helmet comes with both a spike and a trichter. I suspect he's playing games.

Any other opinions are welcomed.

Cheers,

Laurie

Hi Laurie:

Permit me to compliment you on a very thorough evaluation of this intriguing helmet. All I can add is that the Landskokarde would look more appropriate on a Infanterie-Regiment Bremen Nr. 75 helmet.

Did your Photoshop boosting reveal whether the other Kokarde is Preußen or Reichs?

Best regards,

Chas.

Hi there,

Sorry for my delayed reply, Chas., the right-hand kokarde looks like a Prussian, silver on black, rather than a tricolour.

Breathtaking price, eh?

Caveat emptor, big time!

Cheers,

Laurie
