Pickelhaube, Reichslande, Gendarmerie, Zoll ?

Tom,

We have explained this but I'll be damned if I can find all the old threads. We need to find them and consolidate an article. There seem to be three types of these helmets. Officially known as the wappen for the Reichesmilitärgericht. Beamte and police inside the Reich. The things to focus on are the spike, the spite base. There seems to be a smooth spike, a fluted spike, and a fluted spike with a ball on top. There are round and cruciform spite bases. The cruciform ones are pretty small. Often these helmets are considered Zoll or customs. But it is not that easy. All the Beamte were not Zoll. I refer you to this thread by Glenn about a Zoll helmet.-- Fluted no ball.

Prussian Beamte

This is considered a helmet for either military or civil Beamte model 1896.

The real key is not the very specialized spike but rather the spike base. This one is round. The exact same helmet with a cruciform spike base is for the police. While this one is Beamte often the police helmets are confused with customs which had no ball.

Prussian Kommunalpolizei

This is considered a helmet for Prussian Kommunalpolizei model 1896.

The real key is not the very specialized spike but rather the spike base. This one has a cruciform base. The exact same helmet with a round spike base is for Prussian Beamtee. While this one is police often the police helmets are confused with customs.

And then when you try to get all this figured out – something like this comes along.

Hello Joe,

thank you very much for the first-class informations, very nice pics.

the difference I see, is the Eagle on the helmet plate, at all photos with the Zoll/Customs officers, on the eagle is the "W".
The plate on my helmet is the Reichsadler ?

Hey Joe,

That top photo's helmet looks like it has a cross base like the one I have, which is rather flat, stamped. Just a thought.

Here's a Reichsgendarm helmet on foot, and a Prussian customs helmet on duty on the border between annexed Alsace-Lorraine and France between 1871 and 1914.

And here's a Berlin Police (fiftieth anniversary plaque) helmet, similar to the Prussian Customs helmet, but silver instead of gold. The tip, common to police officers, has a small-module cruciform base, and is not “tuliped”.

Reichspolizei officers wore the “administration” eagle Silver.but always the same smooth tip, small cruciform module, finished with a ball. Reichspol Sergent-.GIF
