Pickelhaube tour of Germany

Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately I’m. It going to be able to get to Rastatt or Ingolstadt. The Dresden museum was on my “I want to get there” list, as was the Monument to Nations in Leipzig, but sadly I wasn’t able to make these work this trip.

The Berlin aviation museum is definitely one I’m going to, thanks!

My pleasure, it's a shame you're not going to be able to visit some of the best Museums. The Battle of the Nations Monument and Museum are also a must see. Maybe next time if you make it to Ingolstadt go straight out of the main entrance after your visit and walk up the main street about a block up on the left is a small walk-up shop that has the best tasting Backschinken I've ever had,

Anyway, please take some picture of the WWI planes in Berlin I'm sure members here would love to see them.

Have a safe and great time. mfg John Josef

What is the display now ?
Steve
'Steve,
-as you probably know the original collection was displayed per branch and Land. Best seen in both Larcade volumes.
-now sadly pulled apart in flashy modern "impressive" group volumes. Makes no sense... Many do no longer fit in the displays and are no longer visible to public now. In "storage"
Visiting Pompelle last March on my way to Historia Münsingen.
First 3 pictures = the big mix display without any info. (no problem for haube-dummies:rolleyes:...)
The last photos = my visit at Pompelle on 2007.

To everyone: the museum at Novion Porcien ( if I remember correctly is musee de guere et Paix en Ardennes), is not very well known but is great , one of the best!!! ( it is in Northern France about one hour drive north to Reims, so you can combine it with a visit to Fort de la Pomelle in Reims ( the famous Friese collection of pickelhaubes)
Correct, it's less than 60kms (37mls) and Pompelle closes at 18h.
You better visit Novion Porcien from the first moment on as the museum is frequently visited by school classes.

Here are some of my photos so far. I've been in Berlin for three days.20240525_165335.jpg20240525_165910.jpg20240525_171055.jpg20240525_173210.jpg20240525_173001.jpgAt the Victory Column.

Did you know in some sign languages, the way to say "German" is to sign a spike above your head like a pickelhaube? I learned that at the Deutsches Historisches Museum yesterday.

A beautiful memorial to the dead of the unification wars, 1861, 1866 and 1870, in Columbiadamm Cemetery.

More from Hamburg soon.

The main war memorial in front of the Rathaus in Hamburg is incredibly moving, IMO.
Also, the statue in the ruins of the church which is the memorial to Operation Gamorah... equally so.

I'm back in Australia now, but here are some more images from my trip to Germany. It was extraordinary to see some of these memorials and collections in person.

To start with, some mouth-watering photos of the goods for sale at Helmut Weitze Military Antiques in Hamburg. It is a world-class collection in one room...

This pickelhaube from Brunswick was just beautiful. You can just see the price on the pricetag: 12,500 Euros.

Next, an equestrian statue of Wilhelm I in Hamburg.

And finally, the very moving War Memorial outside the Bavarian State Chancellery in Munich. It is a mournful statue inside a stone crypt in formal parklands.
