Pioneer with squared-visor Pickelhaube

I am hoping someone with more knowledge can help clear this one up for me! I am quite certain this man is a Pioneer of 1. Nassauisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr.21. What has me puzzled is the squared-visor on the Pickelhaube. I thought that was primarily for Dragoons?

Any help appreciated!

If it is a studio pose
the helmet might have supplied by the studio

Imo a typical example of war-time expediency; the ammo pouches aren't the standard Pioniere type either. I can only assume he would have been supplied with the correct helmet when being sent to the front, but not at all certain about that.
