This is a bit of a problem because that helmet is sitting in my display cabinet as we speak, so quite a concern that a fellow in Germany has listed it for sale.

Interesting scam this fellow uses. He sells many $1-2 items to build his feedback then occasionally sells a high end pickelhaube which, surprise surprise, never arrives and he earns a negative feedback from the disgruntled buyer. Of course it was the postal service's fault, so he keeps on practicing his scam.

I have reported this to ebay, lets see what happens.

Yes it was the article I forgot.
The seller makes the strange statement that he is only liable until the transport service takes over. On the other hand he offers only delivery without tracking or insurance, so if it never arrives then thats tough luck but not his fault..

Hey Mike,

Well,

I reported this to ebay several times and they responded that they were investigating thoroughly. The auction ran its course and there was a winning bidder, although the price was very low, so the real collectors must have been wise to the scam. I tried to contact the winning bidder but ebay prevents you contacting anyone you don't have a transaction with. I even tried asking the ebay trust and safety folks to warn the winning bidder before he handed over any money. The seller is still registered as a seller, so I have no idea what action ebay took or didn't take.

there is the site to help report people with low scupples on Ebay , it is not run or associated but help's other's keep people honest.
I feel that Ebay can be good , but like to deal with dealer's i know that will back there item's . A fellow In {Q I have dealt with for over 20 years is excelent that way. I bought the M15 listed in the m15 thread from him.
The bad side is it kills local show's and keep's dealer's like that home , or at least away from thew show .
I hope we can do somthing to protect pic's and even info from being removed from the site , so any one can use it .

Very interesting. I see the same helmet being 'sold' and 'bought'
several times over between the same ebay usernames. My theory is that the guy is listing items he doesn't own under a number of different usernames, and using shill bidders to maximise the price he achieves. Unfortunately, he occasionally wins his own auctions!!! An alternative theory is that he wins items froim himself occasionally to earn positive feedback on big-ticket items.

Based on my experience of several hundred transactions, I would have to say that, in the ebay WW1 militaria market, there seems to be more frauds per head of population in Germany than in any other country. This surprises me, as I expected Teutonic scrupulousness.
 
Of course there are also many ebay sellers from eastern europe
in germany. It seems the real name of 2007skyguide is Kendzierski.
I guess regardless of the nation the best insurance at ebay is
common sense and to ask the seller a few questions. For example, I
had asked both sellers if they would also send the items with
transportation insurance (just to see what would happen), neither of
both answered.
