Private Messages?

Soooo...how does a fella post private messages? I've poked around and can't seem to figure it out. I was guessing the little envelope icon, but that just shows "conversations" for me but doesn't seem to include an option to start one. Thanks in advance!

Brian ; Tony or someone in the know ,
I am in the same boat with Jeff
I would like to send a private message to someone
I have done that in the past under the old system
but I no longer know how to do it

In any post, just click on the name of the member. It will open their "ID" window. Click on the name once again, and you are immediately taken to the private message box.

I must be doing something wrong...that only seems to allow me to do a profile post. Ugh. Usually pretty good with technology...

I tried that once but it never went through. The member never got it and I had no notification that it was ever sent. I gave up. Now I just open a conversation. Can other members see your conversations or are they private?

John

Those conversations are the equivalent of private messages on this system. When you start one you can pick to make it private. Now I can't seem to find out how to start one even though I have done it before! Strange.

As John said, click on the icon of the person you wish to speak to, and then click ’start a conversation’. It appears the term ‘PM’ is extinct.

Only the sender and receiver can see that conversation, accessible via the little envelope on the top of each forum page.

I reckon that's the bit I am missing - there is no "Start a Conversation" option for me - only the option to make a profile post, which is a different thing right?

A reminder, .....our tech support Joel just changed the PM format because of recent porn spam which was using the PM/Conversations to bother our members. He made it so new members are restricted for a short period of time from PM to stop this. I will ask him what the time limit is.

I know, but most members, who are active for a long time now, can also not send PM's now. I for one cannot send them.
And I am a member here for a somewhat longer time.

This is what I get too. I can go into my mailbox (letter top right of screen) and start a conversation, but the double click on the members name doesn't seem to work for me.

John

Ok thanks for that information. I will pass that on to Joel.
Thanks Brian! It seems Joel has eliminated not only the new members, but all of us. I used to see "Start a conversation", below a forum members name, but now it is not present anymore. You could see that, when hovering you're mouse over the users name.
Regarding Skipper John's post here, when I move my computer mouse over his avatar, I can only see Follow, or Ignore.
Before, I could also see Conversation there. Not only with John though, with every member here.

I called myself sending a P M to John M
also just now to Septhes
I did not get a reply from either
so I have no way of knowing if they received the message
I am not a new member and I know that John M is not either

Thanks for the update gentlemen, I sent another email to Joel explaining that now everyone has been effected by the changes to the PM feature. As I mentioned, we were just trying to deal with the porn spam which was using PM’s as a back door to annoy members. We will get this fixed. The overall spam problem would also be solved by a small yearly membership fee in order to participate/ post here on the forum.

I would participate in the donations. As you all know, I am also a member in a large motorcycle forum, using the same Xen-Foro.
Not here, but in my home-country. It works just fine. Everybody, not all, but most, participate, so it keeps the forum clean.
I donate to the forum every year, as you know, but a membership fee would be good for me too. :)

Thanks for your support Coert, I know that other forums do this and I don’t think $20 US per year would be a problem. That is the figure I have in mind. The site’s content would still be totally available to all but only paid members could comment and post photos. As part of this latest spam problem, I have asked Joel to quote me on the cost of doing this monetization. Many of you are unaware, but Tony has been fighting spammers here everyday for years and it is time to do our best to end this problem. I have told Tony this many times but I will state this here publicly......I lucked out decades ago when I met him through this hobby and we became friends. Thank you T for all your help.

Hi all - apologies for the delay, I've just made a change so that you should be able to send PMs now so long as you have at least 15 posts on the forum and have been registered for at least two weeks.

Let me know if it's still not working as expected for you.
