Just picked this one up, and I love it, just the way you want to find them, complete and untouched.

Large size 58 which almost fits me!

Well marked B.A. 8 Tr.A 8 1915 and 3E

I beleive this means Prussian 8th Train Abteilung 3rd Sqaudron.

Chinscales have awesome patina and helmet is in excellant shape!

Thanks

James

Beautiful. I am very fond of Train helmets for some reason. :thumbleft: Your helmet shows very nicely how mounted units, such as Train, cavalry, and most artillery, wore their chinscales right up until they were replaced by the M15 helmets with grey fittings. I have LOADS of photos of guys wearing Feldgrau tunics wearing helmets with chinscales.

Hello,

Beautiful ! =D> =D> =D>
But not untouched.
Spike has been dismantled, may be since a long time.
On Pickelhauben, a hole, and only one of the 5 holes of the spikes, is upper one of the four round stud retainers.
And are in front of the helmet.

Here a little photo :

Congratulations James. Ideal condition. By coincidence, I have also gathered Train spike helmets: Garde, Hesse, Bade... all of them in superb condition.

This is not supported by period photos. Spikes went in all directions. I could post 50 photos of mine where the spike ventilation holes on M1895 spikes, are clearly on either side on the front spike base brad. I have photos, like this one of Badisches Leib-Grenadier-Regt. Nr.109, where half the men in the photo have a ventilation hole in-line with the front spike base brad as you describe (richtig), and half the men have the spike turned the other way (unrichtig).

I agree with Tony. Maybe for once I'm not the minority! I'm not sure that the Bekleidungsordnung specified hole and stud alignment. Do you have such a regulation? I learn something everyday.

Hello,

I have also learned something... :-k :-k :-k
Thanks for the photo.

But, about this
Badisches Leib-Grenadier-Regt. Nr.109
,

- Is it a regulation helmet ?
- Is it not the 6 holes spike, that we can sometimes find on these helmets ?

Best regards \:D/

Excuse me please, I do not know your name? But did you mean five? I do not think I have ever seen a six?

Here are the M1895 modifications>> http://www.kaisersbunker.com/pe/m1895.htm

When a helmet with the vent holes on either side of the front spike base brad is viewed head-on , only two holes will show. The other three cannot be seen. So I assume (?) the IR109 helmet in the photo is an issued regulation.

So based on photos, I see no reason to doubt that James' helmet could was assembled this way in 1915.

Hello

Here a sechs (six, 6) holes spike , found in Champagne (France) in 1978, with a 109. Griffin.
If I find a good photo of a 6 holes- spiked 109. helmet, I shall send it to you.

Hello,
just a question about holes: I found an assembled helmet that look like a Pionier (white fittings) with a long (85 mm) screwed spike in silver plated metal and with 4 holes instead of 5.
I look on my books but I didn't found anything (picture or description ) about 4 holes; should be a Beamter version???
Thanks in advance

Hello,

What I know with 4 holes :
- Helmets of Sweden
-Copies
But I think I never saw good german helmets with 4 holes.
