Here's my latest find courtesy of James. Many of you probably saw this helmet at SOS. I couldn't make it to SOS so I bought this after the fact.

The helmet is in pretty good shape and has a nice patina.

The Wappen is thick stamped brass instead of the thinner brass used on later issue versions.

This helmet has more markings than any other helmet in my collection. The unit "JR53" is clearly marked. The date "1905" is a little more difficult to read.

Next to the unit marking the name "Koenig" is pressed into the leather along with a mark "I/17".

On the opposite side of the rear neck guard is the BA marking "RJR53.IIIB.".

The name "Sander" appears on the inside of the helmet along with a "70/53" mark. Also the manufacturer's mark for "Maury & Co." is stamped on the inside.

The inside of the front visor is also marked "Sander".

Thank you brother James for this nice addition to my collection!

John :)

I looked at that helme during the SOS several times, it is a very nice example. Congratulations :thumb up:

Nice helmet
and from memory I think I R 53
takes a blue shoulder strap with a crown
not sure about the reserve unit

Steve

Reserve unit is the III/RJR53, formed in Barmen.

There are a few SANDER in the RJR53, but no one in the 10 company...

One in the 5. Cie:

Another in the 4. Cie:

In the 12. Cie:

And the last in the MGK 1 / RJR53:

http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/8198454" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It could even be a SANDER who wore this helmet as he was in the active unit JR53 (10 company), before the war...

And I see another name in the neckguard with another unit: KOENIG I/17. (JR17 or RJR17???)

And there are so much KOENIG in the Verlust-Listen.... I think it wil be impossible to determine the last wearer of this beautiful helmet, event the last unit in which it was worn...

Sometimes when the name is too common, it is very difficult to try to find the "Träger" (owner) of the helmet.

But very genuine helmet ! Maybe a trophy

I am glad John got this helmet from my auction, it is a great untouched helmet, with great markings, just cannot keep them all, and had a similar helmet in collection. Had this one for 10 plus years, time to pass it on

James

The pencil mark is "10/53"....for the 10th Komp.

Just a small note....Träger means "wearer" not "owner".
