Had this one for a while now, but there seams to be a bunch of Prussian Generals helmets popping up on Ebay and other sites lately, some good, some bad and some in between IMO.
Anyway, this is mine, with correct type of spike etc.
For learning purposes:
- What Model is this? M1897?
- I see rounded scales. Does this mean it's not Infantry?
- What distinguishes a General's pickelhaube from a regular officer's? The fluted spike only?
Yes indeed ,it takes only a spike switch to turn a Garde Dragoon into a General.
So what you need to look out for is a similar wear and color of the spike and the rest of the parts ,and Generals don’t have worn out liners.
Also on the spike difference, on a Generals, the spike sits on top of the base part that it screws into, where a common spike will overlap the part it screws in to.
Here's mine. The enameled eagle in the center of the star was tilted and I didn't notice. Now it's straight (a little loose, moves with just a finger, so I'm not going to mess with it)
Well as a Prussian General, one could appear in the Generals uniform with James helmet, or one could appear in the uniform of which one was the head of.
But as always ,exceptions were made …as we can see in the picture with kaiser Wilhelm I with the Kurassier helmet in “Generalstellung”
James and Ron, these are indeed beautiful helmets!
Since we get many questions from recently joined members, here is the version with white metal fittings. This one was unearthed "out of the woodwork" in the USA and despite the fact that it was covered with many decades of dirt (or perhaps because of it...) the "matte Versilberung" on the eagle has remained essentially intact. The helmet was just lightly cleaned.
Note, as already stressed by James, that the spike sits on its basis but does not cover the edge thereof.
That's a nice a'la Suite! My understanding is that the a'la Suite was for nobility with an honorary rank of General? At any rate, they did not have command responsibilities? Is any of that correct?
