Can someone please explain to me why at 4hours to auction close, this has already fetched over $1,000 with 20 bids?? Obviously the shell is beyond repair so are the parts worth that much?

Sold for $1,090 !
Unless it's Hindenburg's helmet itself, I don't see what the fuss was about.
Reminds me of those 2 busts that sold for $81,000 at Hermann Militaria's latest auction. Still can't get over that one!

One heck of a restoration project there! This is around 1/6 the price of a good General's helmet, but who knows how much work it will take, or even if it's possible to restore? Personally, too pricey for me, but then, I remember $20 'spikes' from when I was a kid.

Without seeing the fluted spike, how can it be determined if it's a general's helmet? Is by the spike base edge?

Other possibility would be Guard Dragoon, correct? Messed up mess anyway.

Ok, so like I said it was possible that this could be a General's helmet, now at second look it seems a little more confusing than that. Without a fluted spike attached or curved chinscales its hard to say but something struck me as a little odd. The bandeau or ribbon is not of the typical style or shape of a Dragoon or a Guard wappen but that of a Grenadier wappen bandeau! If you read the ribbon closely it reads as "Mitt Gott fur Koenig und Vaterland" with the "Koenig" covered up with the star. That shouldnt be covered up at least not that much. So this helmet seems not to be what it seems unless I am mistaken.

Here's one with a post war liner, but much easier to fix.

The perforated forehead area in the liner seems to show up in post-war helmets worn by veteran officers.

Didn't some of Kaiser Wilhelm II's helmets in the Doorn collection have that feature?

No idea. Something to talk about though! Not a bad price on it.
