Prussian Guard Regiments helmet for Enlisted man

Although the liner is showing some wear and age , this helmet has a superb exterior condition .
So this helmet has been treated with the utmost care by its proud owner/wearer.
Marked ; K.B.A.G. 1916 , the makers stamp ; Franz Cobau-Berlin

The spike looks to be the Jaeger Zu Pferde type though...
Surprisingly enough, my Guard Pickelhaube came with the same type of spike that I ended-up replacing with a line spike... Maybe it was something peculiar to the Guards? :-k

My helmet was made by Hans Römer Neu-Ulm in 1916 so Maker can already be ruled out as a peculiarity.

Anyone else here has a similar Pickelhaube with a JZP Spitze?

Looks great! A thought would be that since Garde units were more elite, they may have used the slightly taller JzP spike. ?

Who could really tell :| I wasn’t there when this helmet was is use, and those spikes are so easily switched. The helmet also looks good with the common spike.

Either way, it looks great Ed. To me, the liner is a LITTLE worn, but still looks very good indeed. I have a Baden M15 with a mint shell and liner that looks like it was soaked in salt water and allowed to dry. The rest of the helmet is perfect.... so your liner looks pretty good!

Personally, if I were a troop back then and could find a taller spike I'd go for it. Anything to make my uniform a little less uniform. :wink:

Hi Ed,

very nice Garde Pickel M15 you got there. Here is mine, not in pristine condition as yours :wink: which acquired earlier this year from a fellow collector. Spike was always on the helmet...

So three guard helmets with this taller 1915 spike. Plus most all 1915 JzP helmets I have seen have the shorter standard spike although some do have a slightly taller spike. This could be random manufacturer's variation. So why do you insist on calling all these taller spikes "JzP"?? Perhaps your JzP is the helmet that has the wrong spike.

Welcome to the Forum.
JzP Metalhelme had the tall ('JzP') spike. The ones that come with the regular line spitze had this done post-war or during the War Bond times when parts were mixed-up.
The reason why we are raising this here is because all 3 Guard-Infantry Pickelhaube examples, including mine, seem to have always had the taller ('JzP') spike from the beginning which would imply some soldiers did prefer to swap their regular line spikes with the JzP one...

Collector may have a point here. I don't believe I have seen anything that details the height of the M15 Spike. perhaps Glenn has. It makes sense to me that the shorter spike would be prevalent as it had to be slightly cheaper to make.

We often see pictures of soldiers wearing their helmets without a spike. Where did they keep them? Were they ever issued them? Did they work their way back to the warehouse where they were mismatched during the war bond drive? Now examples emerge that are positively taller on a leather helmet. Again I have seen nothing that provides guard troops the choice of spike height.
