Hello fellow collectors,

When I bought the Tschapka last week, I also saw a Prussian officer helmet, as you know.
It arrived at my house today, here some pictures of it.








The silk part of the liner is missing, and the dome were the spike is has sunken some, but I know how to fix that, reading Brian's restoration posts.
I also suspect the stars on the spike base are repro's, as they are fixed with hexacon nuts, which isn't correct.
There is a name written in it, on the inside , but almost illegible for me to read. Only the last 2 numbers can be made out, looks like the size, 57. The helmet is big, like my Baden M15.

Beautiful helmet.
If the stars are replacements, originals shouldn't be to difficult to find.
Watch out for that spike! It's tall enough to be dangerous! :D

That's a good looking helmet; and yes that spike must have been flirting with defying the dress regulations.

Yes John, the spike is taller than it should be, and Steve, I don't know about regulations, but most officer helmets do not have a spike that tall.
Have to be careful that I don't poke one of my eyes out with it John. :lol:
It is now in my Haube collection in the livingroom, I like it a lot. :)

That spike is not too tall.
Many officers private purchased helmets had extremely tall spikes.
It looks good in your collection.

I now know that, have been looking in my reference book about Officer helmets by Stubbs, which I bought from James recently just now.
And Amy has one in her profile picture also. :)
Do you know if officer helmets were mostly private purchased? I am more into OR helmets so had nu clue, until looking at the book by Stubbs.
I like this helmet, and bought it at a ridiculous small amount, I gues the seller needed the money I offered for it, because it was immediately accepted.

I will be on the look out for a Tschapka, a shoddy one with a good liner.
If I find it, who knows... I thought I could get away with fitting a liner from a private purchased haube, but it won't fit, as you have seen.

But I will get there, in the end, I hope.

I believe that all officer's helmets were privately purchased.
Just like the U.S. military, German officers purchased their own uniforms.
This doesn't apply to combat gear, of course, but everything else is the officer's responsibility.
I remember that it took me almost three years to pay off my initial issue.

Thanks John, I look every wednesday at his updates!
Yesterday, when his updates were online at 18:00 as usual I was looking and saw a nice original M15 strap for a haube at only 100 euro.
Dirt cheap, but I chose to look at the other pages, but when I returned to that strap it had already sold, in only 8 minutes time..
I have an account at his site, so should have reacted immediately.
But I will send him a message regarding those stars, he has lots of parts, I know. Kokarden, spikes, and more.

It is interesting that we talked about officers having to purchase their own uniforms.
Just the other day I was talking to my wife and I told her that I could still get into my Marine Corps dress blues --- if I use an 8 inch thread to sew the buttons on!

Well John,

It is interesting to know that in those day's they had to buy they're own uniforms, just like you did. Here, everything is supplied by the government, but you can buy extra quality uniforms at ones own cost. Better fitting and better quality, but I never had to, I was only a sergeant.
I still fit my uniform I wore in 1986 though.. combat gear and dress uniform.
Somehow I still wheigh exactly the same as I did then, only my stomach gets a little bit bigger.
I just don't seem to get heavier than 75 kilo's. I guess I am lucky. Only the hair turns grey, gets less everyday, and the face gets more wrinkles, :lol:

You're doing great if you can still fit in your uniform! No way I can....maybe the combat boots. :lol:
Very nice collection! Looks like you're going to need some more shelf space soon. That's a good problem to have!

During WW2 when my father...RAF, RCAF was promoted to Flying Officer, he was given a special allowance to buy the appropriate custom tailored officer uniform and headdress. Fortunately, I still have these pieces. Many CN aircrew flew with the RAF until RCAF squadrons were built up in the UK.
 
Well...I weigh 35 pounds more on a good day from when I was 30, too much good food, good drink and a slower metabolism which comes with age.. Good for you aicusv, though probably, a loss of muscle which weighs more. Old age is ok but it really sucks when health problems arise. Getting back to WW2 and my father....most of these boys were promoted up through the ranks (my Dad) and had no means behind them to pay for officer uniforms. Tremendous losses in aircrew and on the ground so if you need them to fill the officer ranks, you have to give them financial resources to purchase the proper officer uniforms. I would expect the US and UK governments did the same thing get information. It would be very interesting to get information regarding officer uniforms from all combatants during WW1 and WW2.
