The 1902 date makes this a very interesting and unusual helmet. As such, it is a Squadron Jaeger zu Pferde helmet and the proper front plate is a line eagle. In 1905 the Squadrons Jaeger zu Pferde from the various army corps were combined and reformed into Jaeger zu Pferde Regiments. A subtle change, but when the Jaeger zu Pferde regiments were initially formed a silver dragoon front plate was adopted by an A.K.O. on April 1, 1905. The silver front plates were worn by Jaeger zu Pferde regiments one through seven which were formed between 1905 and 1913. An A.K.O. dated July 4, 1913, prescribed a blackened helmet with "yellow fittings" for regiments eight through thirteen that werre fornmed in 1913.
Detailed information on the Meldereiter Detachments, Squadrons Jaeger zu Pferde and Regiments Jaeger zu Pferde can be found on pages 590 through 626 of The German Cavalry from 1871 to 1914 by Ulrich Herr and Jens Nguyen and on Tony's website.
