That's surprising - I would have thought that the German Officer Class would have been to protective to allow that.

I have been quite surprised myself by the changes in one year volunteers. If you have not read it I would be self-serving and suggest that you read The Great War Dawning. There is a chapter on the officer corps, and a bunch of stuff on one year volunteers. Not exactly all the conventional wisdom of the old sources.
