Greetings All...
We don't seem to have too many examples of period Imperial Era flags,Ronnie being the most recent exception
so I thought you perhaps would enjoy seeing a few photos of this example. It is what I believe to be a pre 1871 Royal Household flag which measures about 5 feet square. It is of wool with an elaborate printed design. As you can see it has suffered the ravages of time with repairs to the fly and some additional damage to the central areas of the design.
I do not know too much about these but from what I can see on the net, I believe this predates the unification in 1871 as the large central Iron Cross is without its 1870 date at the bottom. The white or silver-gray background being for members of the royal household other than the King and Queen.
When I first purchased it I had grandiose ideas of getting it framed and hanging it on a wall in the hallway, but after the $1500 quote for framing I folded it back up into itself and placed it back on the shelf in the war room. Oh well, still a cool old relic.
Cheers
