Question for Peter about a cork helmet

I don't think it is military. I see a lot of similar helmets, and these were made for civilian and civil use throughout the early 20th century. Cork was a material that was used because it could be rigid and still light. In the years before plastic this was about as good as it could get without making a helmet really heavy.

Slap an M15 spike, Wappen and cockades on that sucker and you have a rare experimental etsatz Pickelhaube:)

=D> =D> =D> OH YEAH! Put it on ebay and somebody will buy it! Seriously though, what would be the civilian purpose of these? Not for sun, when it's black. Just a rigid 'sport' hat?

It has never been really clear what the use was, but I assume it is a sort of hard hat. Could be used in wet/rainy areas too. Keep in mind up until the 1950s hats were part of normal fashion. Today we don't wear hats but from about the late Middle Ages to post-WWII hats were almost always worn. It was as much fashion as function.

Hats are still worn in some regions, they are worn for function rather than fashion.

Exqjoose me guys, I think you are all very wrong. Dont you see it's actually an M15 helmet for the Üffz. Schüle Sud Afrikanische Expedition, the so called Elephanten Herrn. Here's the only possible way they should look like... With Württemberg helmet plate.
These helmets are always in this black colour as camouflage, because these guys only operated at night. To find one of these is almost impossible because they are as rare as African hen's teeth...
