Question on Wappen.

I'm curious what the experts think about this. Is this a period wappen? Or a cheap fake with a faint aroma of curry about it? It appears to have once had a landwehr cross on it, and the holes were plugged. The plugs appear to be made from the same material and are textured to blend in with the eagle feathers. Some of the details are not real sharp, especially in the crown. It would appear to have been made with the cast/mold technique. Were repairs to a wappen something that was done? It is on an old Kurassier helmet I have. Is this an appropriate wappen for that? Thanks!

Didn’t we already discuss this eagle? It belongs to a helmet M1853, where someone unfortunately tried to straighten the shell and flattened the vertical rib at the back of the helmet:
Anyway, I believe it’s all original. I’m not sure why it once wore a Landwehrkreuz, as the eagle shouldn’t have a “FR” on its chest then. However, I’ve seen many eagles that violated the clothing regulations, so I don’t question its authenticity. At that time, not everything was discarded; instead, it was preserved for as long as possible. If one or the other rule wasn’t fully adhered to, it was simply overlooked.

My interpretation remains that the eagle was produced for a Landwehr Reiter unit. The helmet was then re-issued to a kurassier regiment again later. The old plate was retained but the holes for the landwehr cross were filled and the 1860 bandeau was just attached over it.

Agree, but slightly different. Consider that almost every 1842 Landwehr eagle I have seen manufactured for Landwehr has a Landwehr cross indentation made for it. This eagle tells a fascinating tale.

May I suggest this path of flow:

Model 1842 Line something with FW. Any helmet.
At some point cross added to cover the FW and issued to Landwehr.
After 1860 back to Line. Cross popped off, 1860 Bandeau added.

All that is typical Preussen. Use all helmets and everything else as long as possible.
