I'm NEW!

I've had no experience with Haubes before, I'm in the midst of a trade for a WW1 PH gas mask and carrying bag. He offered me the helmet in the below links.

Until I read this,

So what are your guys opinions? is this real? Am I missing a killer deal?

Help a newbie out!

what are the give aways? Is it just commonly known as a fake or are there particular reasons to believe its fake?

so let me get this straight. Theres no documented existence of these helmets EVER being used by ww1 German forces EVER?

I do not think I have ever seen a photograph of a type III Wappen. Certainly they are documented in different diagrams from some certainly wonderful references. This however, is a fabrication meant to deceive. The easiest way to spot this from a distance is to look at the fake brown trim that goes all the way around. Whenever you see this in conjunction with felt your alarm bells need to be going off. these are extremely common. I actually have one sitting above my desk. We do not know everything about helmets with scrolls nor of headgear in Macedonia but this is not anything from there.

Hello GMAC,
The leather trim is the easyest way to spot a fake felt helmet, there were other erstaz helmets with leather or oilcloth trim, but not felt.
Now for the 64 dollar question, how about a photo of the gas hood? That is a bit of kit that one does not see often.

Heres some pictures of the gas hood. It has 2 mens names that were in the Edmonton reg't on the carrying case. I'll add the links to the mens files with the gov't of Canada as well.

so there it is. What you guys think this is worth? I've never seen another for sale and the names on the bag are a real selling point i guess? [/img]

That is very nice, finding PH hoods is almost impossible, and I have no idea what one would bring, but I would be willing to swap a very nice M1915 Pickelhaube for it with out thinking.

I'm perticularly interested in the ones with the skull and cross bones on them.

like I said I'm relatively new to the world of haubes. What is the signifigance of the skull and crossbones? Are they more rare?

I work in a tattoo shop and I know something like that would be the center piece of my set up!

Most with the skull and cross bones are fake, as this is from one Regiment of hundreds, so there is great demand for this helmet, and for that reason, there are many more out there that are reproduction/fake to meet the demand.
