Regimental Stein Real or Souvenir ?

Hi All,

This was given to me some time ago by a friend who knew I was interested in German military antiques. I have no real interest in steins other than a neat artillery stein with a fuse for a lid. I was going to sell this on eBay but want to be sure I was honest about it. Can anyone give me advise as to its authenticity or is it just a nice souvenir?

Cheers!

Hi,
I’m certainly no expert, but looks like a souvenir to me, as it seems to be a complete decal. Typically a basic decal was used, with details like regimental number, buttons, shoulder straps etc. added in paint.
Regards,
Lars

This is a very nice looking stein.

Are there any painted highlights to the decal?

I am guessing the stein refers to a Bavarian Reservist's service of the 5th regiment? Was he in infantry, or artillery? What is on the other side panel that we cannot see?

I see that it is named. Is that name listed on the smaller sized names of the roster panel?

When using the term "souvenir", all reservist steins were privately purchased "souvenirs" that the reservist purchased as a memento or "souvenir" to commemorate his reservist service.

Is the term "souvenir" being used previously here meant to refer that the stein might be a post war replica or a more modern made stein?

If this stein was possibly made during the Imperial German period of time, my guess is that this was a cheaper or lower priced form of reservist stein that was available to purchase. The use of a decal only without any added painted highlights to the decal, and the use of a flat top lid, and no Bavarian coat of arms for a thumblift, all would make this one of the lower priced options stein to purchase by a reservist.

Best Wishes,

Alan
