Greetings new haube collectors! I have mentioned in previous posts that once the war commenced, the Germans realized that their pre war regimentally marked helmets could provide information to the enemy when captured. You will have noticed that pre war issued helmets were generally ink stamped on the inside of the rear visor with this information. Consequently, I have mentioned that markings were removed and here is a photo which illustrates that:

My apologies for the quality of the picture, I will try for a brighter day tomorrow. However, we can see that the regimental pre war ink stamps have been removed but the year of acceptance into stores, "1909" has been left on the rear visor. This piece belongs to a Prussian M95 Arty helmet that I was prepping for restitch today.

I have seen markings blacked out as well as scraped. It may also have something to do with being turned in to be reissued, the helmet was no longer property of the regiment it was originally issued and marked to.

New collectors should also be aware of a "bogus dealer statement" that I used to run into during the 80's and 90's.....The plate on the helmet doesn't match the markings because "the guy was transferred " to a different regiment so they just changed the plate. BS! This is why as a long time collector, I value properly marked issued OR helmets with the correct matching wappen.
